Humanoid Robots: Core Rare Earths Roadmap - Nd, Pr, Dy in PMs
 Jun 16, 2025|View:885

Humanoid robots are emerging as a transformative force across industries, from healthcare to manufacturing. At the heart of their functionality lies an intricate web of materials, with rare earth elements (REEs) playing a pivotal role. In this technological ecosystem, neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), and dysprosium (Dy) stand out as the cornerstone components of permanent magnet (PM) materials.

Nd and Pr are integral to neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, the most powerful permanent magnets commercially available. These magnets are crucial for humanoid robots' servo motors, enabling high torque and precision in limb movement. Their exceptional magnetic properties allow robots to perform complex tasks, such as delicate object manipulation or precise locomotion. Meanwhile, Dy is added to NdFeB magnets to enhance their heat resistance, ensuring reliable performance even under demanding conditions. This is particularly important for humanoid robots operating in dynamic environments where temperature fluctuations are common.

However, the reliance on these rare earths presents challenges. REE extraction and processing raise environmental concerns, and geopolitical factors can disrupt the supply chain. As humanoid robot development accelerates, the industry faces a dual imperative: optimizing PM material performance while seeking sustainable, resilient solutions. Innovations in low-REE magnets and recycling technologies offer promising pathways to mitigate these issues, ensuring a more robust future for humanoid robotics.
