View:560Against the backdrop of the rapid development of new energy vehicles, rare earths, as a group of elements with unique physical and chemical properties, are quietly playing an irreplaceable role in multiple key components, becoming an important force driving the progress of the new energy vehicle industry.
Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Motors: Innovation in the Source of Power
In the drive system of new energy vehicles, rare earth permanent magnet motors have become the mainstream choice. In 2023, their proportion in global new energy vehicles reached as high as 50.89%. Each new energy vehicle uses approximately 2.5 kilograms of neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnet materials to manufacture such motors. Taking the Tesla Model Y as an example, the neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnet equipped in its drive motor has a magnetic energy product of 44 MGOe, which is 5 times higher than that of traditional ferrite magnets. This advantage enables the motor to reduce its volume by 30% and increase its efficiency by 15%. With the characteristics of simple structure, reliable operation, small size, light weight, low loss, and high efficiency, rare earth permanent magnet motors provide strong and efficient power output for new energy vehicles, greatly optimizing the vehicle's dynamic performance and endurance. What's more, as technology advances, the application of dysprosium and terbium in rare earth permanent magnet motors has effectively improved their high-temperature resistance, allowing them to maintain stable performance even in the high-heat environment of long-term operation, which is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of new energy vehicles during long-distance driving.
Rare Earth Elements in Power Batteries: The Key to Improving Performance
In the field of battery systems, rare earth elements also play a key role. Rare earth elements are added to the cathode materials of some power batteries to improve the charge-discharge performance, enhance thermal stability, and extend the service life of the batteries. In nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (NCM) ternary lithium batteries, adding trace rare earth elements can effectively inhibit phase transitions during charge and discharge, reducing capacity fading. Even in high-temperature environments, the battery can maintain stable performance, providing a solid guarantee for the safety and durability of new energy vehicles and ensuring reliable operation in various complex environments. For instance, the addition of lanthanum in lithium iron phosphate batteries can significantly increase the ion conductivity, making the charging speed faster. This not only shortens the charging time for users but also reduces the impact of frequent charging on battery life, further enhancing the practicality of new energy vehicles.
Application of Rare Earths in Automobile Exhaust Purification: A Boost to Environmental Protection
Although new energy vehicles are distinguished from traditional fuel vehicles by their cleanliness and environmental protection, some new energy vehicle models still produce exhaust gas under specific working conditions, and rare earths play an important role in exhaust gas purification. In three-way catalytic converters, rare earth elements, as important components, can improve catalytic efficiency. They can act as storage materials to replace part of the main catalysts and serve as catalytic promoters to promote the conversion of harmful gases in exhaust gas, achieving more efficient exhaust purification. This helps new energy vehicles take a step forward in environmental performance and reduce negative impacts on the environment. Specifically, cerium, with its excellent oxygen storage and release capacity, can quickly adjust the oxygen concentration in the catalytic reaction, making the conversion of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides more thorough, thus meeting stricter emission standards.
Rare Earth Ceramic Materials in Oxygen Sensors: A Guarantee for Precise Control
Due to their special electronic structure, rare earth elements have oxygen storage functions and are often used in the preparation of ceramic materials for oxygen sensors in electronic fuel injection systems. This application can significantly improve the sensitivity and accuracy of oxygen sensors. After accurately sensing the oxygen content in the exhaust gas, the oxygen sensor feeds back to the automobile control system, thereby optimizing the fuel injection amount, realizing the improvement of automobile fuel economy and precise control of emissions, and making new energy vehicles more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly during operation. Moreover, the rare earth ceramic materials used in oxygen sensors have good corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance, ensuring that the sensors can work stably for a long time in harsh environments such as high temperature and corrosion, reducing the frequency of replacement and maintenance, and lowering the overall cost of vehicle use.
With their unique properties, rare earth elements play a crucial role in multiple key components of new energy vehicles, such as drive motors, power batteries, exhaust purification, and oxygen sensors. As the new energy vehicle industry continues to expand, the importance of rare earths will become increasingly prominent. In the future, with the continuous advancement of technology, rare earths may also develop more innovative applications in the field of new energy vehicles, further promoting the new energy vehicle industry towards higher performance, more environmental protection, and smarter development.
