Applications of cerium oxide

Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in automobile exhaust are very harmful to air quality. Ceria is an indispensable component in automobile exhaust purification catalysts and plays a significant role. It has unique redox properties: it can store oxygen when there is sufficient oxygen and release oxygen when there is insufficient oxygen. This strongly promotes the redox reaction of harmful gases, turning them into harmless substances like carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen. It helps automobile exhaust meet emission standards and contributes to protecting the atmospheric environment.

Beyond its core role in regulating redox reactions, cerium oxide offers additional practical values in automobile exhaust purification. It can enhance the thermal stability of catalysts, preventing the sintering of precious metal particles under high-temperature operating conditions of engines and extending the service life of catalysts. Meanwhile, its excellent oxygen migration capacity can broaden the catalyst's adaptability to fluctuations in the air-fuel ratio, enabling it to maintain efficient purification effects even when the exhaust composition changes drastically during vehicle acceleration or deceleration.
